XXXIII Annual International Congress of Gerontology and Geriatrics: Loneliness and social isolation. New challenges and resources

Although it is difficult to measure social isolation and loneliness accurately, there is strong evidence that many adults aged 50 and older are socially isolated or lonely in ways that put their health at risk. Older people are at greater risk of loneliness and social isolation because they are more likely to face factors such as living alone, losing family or friends, chronic illness and hearing loss.

This congress of the Sociedade Galega de Xerontoloxía e Xeriatría will reflect on this complex phenomenon with very diverse expressions.

This 61st congress of the Spanish Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology and the 26th congress of the Aragonese Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology, brings together experts from the social and healthcare field in the field of ageing and the elderly.  This event offers a proactive approach to the normalised stigmatisation of the elderly as a dependent, sad or passive person, trying to highlight that there is such a thing as quality active ageing. Hence the slogan chosen for the occasion: "More and more older people: old age in a positive way".

2nd Virtual Congress of the Spanish Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology (SEGG). New challenges for ageing.

This is the second virtual congress organised by the SEGG and we are doing so with the experience gained at the first virtual congress, which served as a learning experience, and with the commitment to increase the number of participants and the scientific level of the first meeting.

Although we are looking forward to holding congresses again that allow the physical presence of the congress participants, which always stimulates human contact and makes professional contact easier, the situation of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in our country obliges us to continue working virtually.
