Violences against older women

  Date:
09/11/2021 to 11/11/2021
 Type: Others
 Location: Tolosa Town Hall

Gender violence affects women throughout their life cycle, but being a woman and also being older are high-risk factors for suffering it, with the aggravating factor that this violence is more invisible than in other stages of life.

Its manifestations are diverse: from humiliation, humiliation, neglect and abandonment, control of money, sexual abuse... to murder as the ultimate expression of the domination exercised over them.

Women with different degrees of dependency suffer physical, psychological or sexual abuse at the hands of their partners, children and even health personnel or caregivers.

There is also economic violence when many older women cannot make ends meet with the income they have. These women have been the ones who have generated wealth through reproductive and care work, and many, despite their advanced age, still continue to do so. All of these tasks are not socially recognised as "work" and are not paid.

Gender-based violence is compounded by the pension gap, increasing the risk of violence against women.

For all these reasons, ONEKA has organised this first forum with the collaboration of EMAKUNDE and the City Council of Tolosa in which the following speakers will take part:

  • Maribel Pizarro, Director of the Gipuzkoa Telephone of Hope. Psychologist and expert in gender perspective.
  • Miren Aranguren, Member of Emagin and co-author of "Gure Genealogia feminista".
  • Mari Luz Esteban, Graduate in medicine from the University of the Basque Country and PhD in anthropology from the University of Barcelona.
  • Nerea Almazán, Graduate in Psychology from the Public University of the Basque Country, Official Master's Degree in Psychogerontology from the University of Barcelona. Psychologist and researcher at Matia Instituto.
  • Ruth Iturbide, Doctor in Human and Social Sciences; Graduate in Law; Diploma in Work.
