Elderly People in the economy of the Basque Country

The ageing of the population in the Basque Country and its demographic future is a reality that at least worries policy makers, planners and experts in these areas of knowledge, regarding the consequences they may have on public policy. This phenomenon has many aspects; it is a success of advanced societies, it is a challenge, and we must prevent it from becoming a problem. The purpose of this study is to analyse the situation of the elderly in the economy of the Basque Country, from a perspective similar the one proposed by Stiglitz, Sen and Fitoussi (Commission on the Measurement of Economic Development and Social Progress) and to the one praised in many documents from international organisations, especially the Platform for Action of the United Nations Conference (Beijing, 1995).
