The participation of the person is a core element in person-centred care.

That the person, despite their disability or the need for support and care, can have control over their life and maintain a life in accordance with their values, preferences and life project is precisely what these models of care seek and pursue as opposed to other approaches where others, professionals and families, decide for them.

Experience shows us how difficult it is to generate and systematise real and sustained opportunities for the participation of the person in their care plan, as well as in the decisions that affect life in the unit. A paternalistic approach in which there is a desire to overprotect, deciding for others without taking them into account, beliefs of lack of capacity, organisational routines, etc. are aspects that hinder this participation and for which those who accompany the person are responsible.
