One of the main challenges facing today's social and healthcare systems is caring for an increasingly ageing population. It is estimated that, in our immediate context, the number of people over 65 will double in the coming years. Despite ageing and the frailty that can come with the passage of time, we should not give up the possibility of continuing to live independently with the necessary support.

This round table discussion is part of a series of activities on accessibility being held at COAM in the first half of 2025 (along with the AccessibleEU conference and the international meeting with experts from the UIA).
Among the participants is our colleague Elisa Pozo Menéndez, a researcher responsible for architectural design at Matia Instituto, who will give a presentation on new models of residences based on cohabitation units and innovation projects, using the example of the Lugaritz lifetime housing model.

Uno de los principales retos de los actuales sistemas social y sanitario es la atención a una población cada vez más envejecida. Se calcula que, en nuestro contexto próximo, el número de personas de más de 65 años se duplicará en los próximos años. 9th ACRA Conference in ACP. "How people of the 21st century want to live aging. ACP in a changing world".

Ninth edition of ACRA's conference in ACP in which one of the most important challenges facing the sector is faced: how to respond to aging in an increasingly changing world. An appointment in which to discover innovative pioneering experiences in a framework of participation and debate open to attendees.

Among the participants will be Iraide Robles, social worker and case manager of Matia, and Juncal Gárate, a neighbor of Lugaritz supported housing. Both will share their vision of this innovative housing based on a home model perspective and a community approach.

On Wednesday 17 January, our colleagues Iraide Robles, Social Worker - Case Manager at Lugaritz housing, and Maria Karmen Garmendia Lasa, President of the Matia Board of Trustees, gave a talk organised by Helduen Hitza, in which they shared a series of ideas related to care and the current profiles of elderly people. A new longevity with very different lifestyles and needs, to which the care system must adapt, with a new, more community-based, flexible approach, centred on the person and their decision-making.
