System for Promoting Independence and Supporting Those in Need of Care: Horizon 2050

At this second session of the multi-venue conference, we will focus on the demographic and social trends that are reshaping long-term care and on the challenges posed by ensuring its sustainability: how to adapt a system historically reliant on the family to one based on high-quality, personalised and local care and support, connected to community life, whilst demographic changes and shifts in household composition confront us with a significant increase in demand. The meeting will address the key drivers of this transition: funding, quality, innovation and technology, and the recruitment and retention of care workers, amongst other key issues such as ensuring more years of independent living with well-being and inclusive communities. These reflections will enable us to draw up a roadmap for moving towards a sustainable (in economic, social and ethical terms) and person-centred system.

All of this will be organised around three key challenges:

• Challenge A. Prevention: How can we maintain wellbeing and independence in more inclusive environments?

• Challenge B. Funding and quality: How can we secure greater investment and resources for long-term care, whilst guaranteeing quality?

• Challenge C. Attracting and retaining professionals: How do we manage to attract and retain enough professionals in the care sector?
