Conference: ‘Raising awareness of ageism and actions to combat it’

  Date:
10/12/2025
 Type: Conference
Line of Knowledge: Cares, Social politics
 Location: Madrid

The overall objective of this conference, held on International Human Rights Day, is to highlight the different manifestations of ageism (self-inflicted, interpersonal and institutional) in different contexts (social, health and participation). The aim is to raise awareness of these ageist manifestations and to learn about the action plans put in place to combat it in social and health care, hospital, participation and leisure settings. The ultimate goal is to disseminate and promote a positive, diverse and realistic view of old age and ageing and to generate debate to reduce ageism.

Our colleague, Penélope Castejón, a researcher at Matia Institute, will participate in a panel discussion on the social image of dependent older people, as well as personal autonomy and dignified treatment as fundamental rights of older people. The aim is to raise awareness of the phenomenon of ageism in professional care contexts and to share specific actions that are being taken to reduce ageism in institutional settings for older people, such as nursing homes and day centres.

The full video of the round table discussion: ‘Proposals for action against ageism in residential settings and day centres’ is available here.
