On 19th May we will talk on AfundaciónTV about ageism: stereotypes, feelings and discriminatory treatment towards the elderly (or young people) because of their age, with Elena del Barrio, within the cycle Emotions and Solitudes.

Our society has internalised prejudices about age and ageing that discriminate against older people, often without us realising it. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), ageism is the third cause of discrimination in the world after racism and sexism. Those who are breaking down stereotypes today are older people themselves, who are demanding an identity of their own and the recognition that once they retire they are not who they are, or who they have been. However, the current pandemic has meant a step backwards, stigmatising old age in many cases and bringing to the surface a condescending and paternalistic treatment of the elderly. Elena del Barrio will help us to recognise, reflect on and dismantle these stereotypes and prejudices, the first step towards overcoming them.
