From a functional point of view, frailty is a state of high vulnerability in which the ability of frail elderly people to adapt to adverse events such as a fall or the flu is reduced, leading to functional deterioration and dependence. Frailty has a major impact on society, affecting 7-16% of people aged between 60 and 65 years, and increasing with age to 50% in older age groups or those with several diseases.

The good news is that frailty is reversible. Many scientific studies conclude that the best way to prevent dependence and reverse frailty is through multicomponent exercise. However, there is currently no tool capable of detecting frailty and its degree in an objective and effective way, nor are there suitable environments adapted to older people for exercise.

The HAUSKOR project gives continuity to a line of work on frailty in older people that began in 2015 with the FRAILTEK 1 and 2 projects, in which new strategies, tools and products aimed at the identification and assessment of the frailty syndrome were developed. The work continued with the FALCO project (2017-2018) and the development of advanced devices for training/recovery of physical and cognitive capacity in pre-fragile and frail people. The evidence generated has led to the present HAUSKOR project (2018-2019) of new scenarios for the promotion of autonomy and health in aging, and the design and development of new environments, products and services for frailty assessment and multicomponent functional capacity training.

Objectives

The objective of the HAUSKOR project is twofold:

  • To provide health professionals with comprehensive tools for a simple, quantifiable and objective assessment of frailty in the elderly and to prescribe the most appropriate physical exercise to prevent or reverse dependence.
  • To develop strategies and create friendly environments and services that facilitate the participation of the elderly in multicomponent functional exercise programs as an optimal therapy to reverse the state of frailty and improve their autonomy and quality of life. To this end, HAUSKOR will create the first prototype of a pilot center (Senior Corner), an ecosystem consisting of two areas or scenarios: one for objective assessment and diagnosis of frailty in the healthcare setting, and the other for non-medical assessment in community settings and functional capacity training.

Results

Consortium

HAUSKOR is funded by the Department of Economic Development and Competitiveness of the Basque Government through the Hazitek 2018 call. The consortium, coordinated by Matia Fundazioa, is made up of a total of eleven companies and eight centers of the Basque Science, Technology and Innovation Network.
