Dementia is a prevalent disease in institutionalized people. In these people, in addition to anti-dementia drugs, anti-cholinergic drugs are frequently used, the adverse effects of which can cause cognitive and functional decline.

In this work, the prevalence of drugs with anticholinergic and sedative load in institutionalized people with dementia was studied, finding a high frequency of prescription of these drugs and an association of this load with falls, hospital admissions and consultations to hospital emergency departments. We conclude that there is a need to propose interdisciplinary strategies for pharmacotherapy optimisation.
