Can age-based prejudice, stereotypes or discrimination lead to older people becoming less socially active and increase the risk of unwanted loneliness?

To address this challenge, the Grandes Amigos Foundation is promoting the project ‘The Link Between Ageism and Loneliness: Analysing, Raising Awareness and Preventing Discrimination Against Older People’, funded through national income tax by the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs and the 2030 Agenda. As part of this project, Matia Institute has carried out this study of the same name.

he Canary Islands are exploring new approaches to housing access at an event on collaborative housing cooperatives to be held on 22 May at Club La Provincia in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. This event provides a forum for meeting and dialogue to share experiences, lessons learnt and ways forward regarding cooperative housing under a right-of-use arrangement in the Canary Islands.

Workshop: Innovative solutions to combat loneliness and social isolation in the world’s major cities

The overall objective of this conference, held on International Human Rights Day, is to highlight the different manifestations of ageism (self-inflicted, interpersonal and institutional) in different contexts (social, health and participation). The aim is to raise awareness of these ageist manifestations and to learn about the action plans put in place to combat it in social and health care, hospital, participation and leisure settings. The ultimate goal is to disseminate and promote a positive, diverse and realistic view of old age and ageing and to generate debate to reduce ageism.

As part of the celebration of Older People's Week in Zumárraga, the Town Council, in collaboration with Nagusilan and the Municipal Council for Older People, has organised a talk on ageism in which our colleague Andrea Pozo, a researcher at the Matia Institute, will provide an overview of the concept of ‘ageism’ with practical examples and encourage reflection on the stereotypes and beliefs about age that are still present in our daily lives.
The event will take place at the Zelai Arizti Cultural Centre.
